THE UNDERGROUND FILM STUDIO NEWS – AUGUST 2017
Over the last month or so we’ve been getting our heads down and working on the final touches of our latest feature film Black Sun (2017) – this film, which was shot in Summer 2016, is a part of a series we are working on about darkness. We have been really interested in the subject for a few years now and have various works in the pipeline exploring ideas around this theme, we are particularly interested in darkness as a space where the imagination runs wild and where the veil between outer and inner world is lifted. Black Sun is a film that has evolved and mutated a lot over the course of its production, it has been challenging at times but a very rewarding and exciting process. There is some more info and stills here.
THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS
It took us a little while but we finally have a trailer for The Kingdom Of Shadows (2016). We’ve had eight screenings so far and are currently working on plans for more over the coming months, the next one will take place at Station To Station film event in Sofia, Bulgaria in September. This is the second event of this new touring festival that started in Warsaw in June where The Kingdom of Shadows screened alongside an exciting selection of new experimental and artist cinema. Unfortunately we weren’t able to attend the screening but we wrote a short intro which was read out before the film by the festival’s organiser, Iga Rita Stepien, you can read it here.
FILM REVIEWS BY NIKOLA GOCIĆ
Last week cinephile blogger Nikola Gocić published an article on Cultured Vultures called “10 MODERN UNDERGROUND MOVIES TO WATCH WHEN YOU’RE SICK OF HOLLYWOOD: A primer on filmmaking from the margins…” – we are very honoured to have our film The Kingdom Of Shadows included on this list. What was also pleasing was to find that several friends and collaborators were on the list too, including Sarahjane Swan, Roger Simian, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Fabrizio Federico and Scott Barley.
Nikola Gocić has recently been reviewing lots of films by contemporary experimental and underground filmmakers on his blog.
He also recently published a great list of 11 Weird Movies From The 21st Century No One Talks About, in which our film In Search Of The Exile (2016) was included!
FILM INTERNATIONAL REVIEWS SAVAGE WITCHES
Filmmaker David Finkelstein recently reviewed our feature film Savage Witches (2012) for Film International. Savage Witches was our first collaboration and the film that launched The Underground Film Studio and it is wonderful that after all this time people are still interested in screening and reviewing this film, check out his review here.
THE ILLUSION OF MOTION PICTURES
Our films have also recently been the subject of a new video essay by Portuguese Filmmaker João Monteiro of A Severa Filmes, called ‘The Illusion Of Motion Pictures – A Video Essay on the Films of Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais’. It is available to watch online:
IN THE ARBOR OF THE BITTER ORANGE
Here are a few stills from In The Arbor Of The Bitter Orange (2017), a new film by Scottish filmmakers Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian, also known as Avant Kinema. We had the great pleasure of spending an afternoon performing in this dream-like film about two mysterious characters who emerge from the sea and break into an old house, eager to devour the rancid oranges which grow in the garden!
Check out Avant Kinema’s wonderful new showreel and you might catch a few glimpses of us in action!
That’s it for now, we’ll have more news and announcements in September.
Thanks for reading and have a nice summer friends!
