Last February we flew to Dublin for the world premiere of Rouzbeh Rashidi’s Phantom Islands, our trip was intended to be short and we were due to leave early morning following the screening. While we were in the cinema watching the film a snow storm hit, we left the screening to find Dublin transformed into a beautiful snow covered winter wonderland. The snow was so severe that our flight was cancelled, in fact all flights were cancelled for several days and what was supposed to be a two day stop turned into a week. Luckily we were staying with our dear friends at the Experimental Film Society, so we spent the week holed up in their apartment discussing cinema, watching films and exchanging ideas. We also teamed up with Maximilian Le Cain on shooting a short film capturing this strange and magical week. We are very happy to announce that the film is now complete and available to watch below.
We shot the film on miniDV, passing the camera back and forth between us. Max then took the footage and edited down the two tapes into a fantastic 8 min film. Once the edit was complete he sent it to us and we set about creating the sound. Our usual approach to sound design is to record everything ourselves from scratch but we decided to do something different here, we have constructed the soundscape entirely from found sounds, mostly taken from other movies that we spoke about during our stay and also that came to mind while watching Max’s edit.
So here it is, the latest mutant child to be born from the ungodly marriage of The Underground Film Studio & Experimental Film Society.
