In July we had the great pleasure of playing the lead roles in Rouzbeh Rashidi‘s latest film Phantom Islands which is currently in post-production. We spent two weeks travelling around Ireland exploring some of the most beautiful locations in the country, from the overgrown gardens and woods of Valentia island to the desolate rocky Aran islands and many other places along the way.
In the film we play Boris and Zoe, a couple caught in a web of their own torment who spiral down into the shadowy depths of despair! We had a lot of fun playing these troubled characters and manifesting their madness through performance. Mostly wordless, we were able to explore the use of movement and gesture almost like an improvised dance, at times contorting and wild, at other times almost like zombies in a hypnotised dream state!
For us this was one of the most enjoyable and relaxed film shoots we have ever been on, usually when we are making a film we are having to deal with organising a million things and there is a great deal of stress and chaos involved but this was a wonderful opportunity to experience making a film from the other side of the camera.
We can’t wait to see how Rouzbeh puts it all together, one thing we know is that it will have evolved and changed a lot along the way and we expect to be surprised! Rouzbeh is a very instinctive filmmaker with a quick eye, he never hesitates and responds to the moment without second guessing. His process is one of discovery, he sets out in search of the film and it reveals itself to him along the way, he trusts in the creative process and lets it guide him through the shoot. We are certain that this is going to be a truly original work of cinema!
